ASET Position Statement
ASET recognizes that consistent with hospital policies and procedures, the Neurodiagnostic Technologist may enter a physician’s order that is within their scope of practice.
To address all elements of a safe environment with respect to verbal orders, ASET recommends that Neurodiagnostic Technologists review the hospital policies and procedures regarding verbal orders and incorporate appropriate written directives in their department policies.
The Joint Commission created a National Patient Safety Goal to address the error-prone procedure of verbal orders. The goal states that the receiver of the verbal or telephone order should write down the complete order or enter it into a computer, then read it back, and receive confirmation from the individual who gave the order or test result.
