With deep sadness, ASET announces the passing of Michael Rhiannon Young, a pioneer in the field of neurodiagnostics and a cherished member of our community. Michael passed away leaving behind a legacy of technical excellence, mentorship, and historical preservation that continues to resonate across the profession.

Michael’s fascination with electricity and problem-solving began in childhood, where his inventive spirit was evident in elaborate home projects involving real wire and a fearless curiosity. That same ingenuity followed him into the world of theatre, where he contributed his talents in sound and lighting to school productions.

Michael formally entered the field of electroencephalography (EEG) in 1970 after completing a specialized EEG program following his studies in biomedical technology at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). He had previously earned a degree from the University of British Columbia but was drawn to a more hands-on and technical profession. His career took him from hospital EEG labs on Vancouver Island to innovative research within the correctional system in British Columbia, and later to the Epilepsy Unit at UCLA, where he worked with video and reel-to-reel EEG recording systems.

A gifted educator, Michael returned to BCIT where he taught EEG technology for sixteen years, shaping the next generation of technologists. His students went on to serve in nearly every province of Canada, and in locations as distant as Saudi Arabia and California. His teaching spanned a transformative period in neurodiagnostics, bridging the era of ink pens and paper recordings to the digital age. His ability to lead both new and experienced professionals through this monumental transition was a testament to his vision and generosity.

Michael worked with Grass Instruments as a trusted guide through the complexities of adopting computer-based EEG systems, helping many make the leap with confidence and competence. One of his most memorable professional journeys took him on an “around the world” trip that included stops in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Timmins, Ontario—a route as eclectic as the man himself.

Michael also had a deep respect for the roots of the profession. As a member of the ASET Historical Advisory Committee, he generously donated vintage EEG equipment and contributed to efforts that helped preserve the story of neurodiagnostics for future generations. His demonstration of a 16-channel ink-writer EEG machine at the ASET meeting in Louisville remains a fond memory for many who shared his reverence for the past—even as they no longer missed the ink splatters of old.

In his personal life, Michael was a man of consistency, curiosity, and gentle humor. He embraced new technologies with enthusiasm, from testing electric vehicles to navigating an array of remotes in his home. His electric bike brought him joy and ease on the hilly roads near home, a small but telling example of his lifelong passion for innovation and exploration.

Michael Rhiannon Young’s contributions to the field of neurodiagnostics and to ASET are indelible. His knowledge, generosity, and dedication to both history and progress enriched us all. We honor his memory with gratitude and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former students, and colleagues around the world.

He will be deeply missed.
