In Memoriam

Brian Markley was serving a term as a member of the Board of Directors of the ASET Foundation at the time of his passing on August 30th, 2024, after his courageous battle with cancer. This service was only the most recent contribution of many that Brian made to ASET and the neurodiagnostic profession. He also served on the ASET Board of Trustees and as president-elect, followed by the ASET presidency from 2012 to 2014. However, he is perhaps most beloved by ASET members for his talent as a musician and member of the Dendrites band that entertained members during social events at ASET conferences. He played guitar and sang a wide range of musical styles, much to the delight of all.

He was skilled at many neurodiagnostic procedures and passed several certification exams. He worked at The Neurology Center in Silver Springs, Maryland, for forty-two years, where he also served as the clinic’s Information Technology support. His devotion as a neurodiagnostic educator is evident, given that he served as faculty for numerous ASET conferences and seminar courses, most often on nerve conduction topics, including hands-on workshops. He was also an author of ASET’s online nerve conduction courses and donated his royalties back to ASET. His contributions to ASET were formally recognized when he was awarded an ASET Fellowship, and he was a very deserving recipient of this honor.

Brian was highly informed about “Robert’s Rules” and helped keep board meetings within the guidelines, which his fellow board members appreciated. He was a dedicated participant in the annual walk for epilepsy in Washington, DC, to support research funding for epilepsy, and he represented the neurodiagnostic community of ASET and ABRET by carrying the banner for the “Brain Team” and “EEG Avengers.”

Brian’s friends, colleagues, and patients greatly appreciated his gentle smile, soft voice, and infectious laughter. He was an inspiring example of servant leadership and will be missed by all who knew him.
