Brain Mapping for the Technologist: Navigating the Minefield of Eloquent Cortex

Not all brain tissue is valued the same; pathology adjacent to eloquent cortex is the 'prime real estate' of the brain which subserves critical neurological functions such as speech and motor function. Brain mapping with neurophysiologic techniques can provide the neurosurgeon with crucial functional data necessary to widen the margin of safety for the resection of tumors, vascular malformations, and epileptic tissue. The technologist plays a critical role in these surgeries; an approach to this role and pearls to successful mapping will be discussed.
