How to Properly List Your Academic Degrees and Credentials

It is universally acceptable to list your academic degrees and credentials after your name. However, with so many different credentials available in neurodiagnostics, it can be confusing how to do so correctly. Below is the standard order that ASET utilizes in its publications and correspondences. For more information, please also refer to ASET’s position statement Utilization of Professional Credentials.

Order of Listing #

1. College degrees first (M.D., Ph.D., D.O., MPH, MBA, MA, MS, BS, BA, AS, AA, etc.). In most cases, an advanced degree replaces 2- and 4-year degrees, so it would not be appropriate to list, Jane Doe, BS, MS, Ph.D. The correct way to list degrees in this case would be as Jane Doe, Ph.D.
2. ND-related credentials second or third (based upon personal preference)
3. Non-ND-related credentials second or third (RN, LPN, RRT, etc.)
4. Diplomate and fellow credentials are placed last with respect to the honor established with these achievements (D.ABNM, and/or FASET, FACNS, etc.)
   We list diplomates before fellowships because they require passing a board exam.

Use of Periods #

1. Most registries use periods, except sleep credentials. Certifications do not.
2. Advanced degrees above master-level use periods. Master, bachelor, and associate do not.
3. Diplomates use periods. Fellows do not.
