- Why do you want to serve as a trustee?
I entered the field of intraoperative monitoring in January 2006 having the desire to utilize my background in neuroscience to have a direct impact on patient care. For the last eighteen years I built a career in neurodiagnostics that included roles as a clinician, manager, educator, researcher, and executive. I owe much to the relationships that I built along the way with my colleagues and managers as well as to the resources that I received through professional affiliations with organizations like ASET. While I hope I have given back to the field through my work primarily as an educator, author, and researcher, I desire to continue to repay those that helped foster my growth in the field.
Serving ASET in the capacity of a trustee will allow me to give to the neurodiagnostic field on a broader level. I look forward to using my skills to provide a collaborative and strategic voice to the Board of Trustees as the Board sets the priorities and direction of ASET and continues to promote the interest of the membership.
- How would you define your role as trustee in the context of the current Board job descriptions?
The ASET Board of Trustees is the governing authority of the Society and has the important roles of developing the strategic goals for the society, ensuring the appropriate resources are available to achieve these goals, and to track and assure progress. It is the responsibility of the Board to represent and promote the interest of the membership. These interests should be reflected in the strategic goals and priorities established by the Board.
My role as a trustee would to leverage my diversity of experience to provide a collaborative and strategic voice to the Board of Trustees as the Board seeks to fulfill its responsibilities and roles. ASET's governing philosophy is expressed as the Power of One. This philosophy entails deliberating with many diverse voices but governing as one. Therefore, each trustee is important to the process, but must respect and buy into the determination of the larger body.
- What are the unique skills you possess that would benefit you in your tenure as a BOT member? How did you develop those skills?
My career has spanned many roles including scientist, educator, and neurodiagnostic professional. I've had the opportunity to work in very diverse spaces especially as a neuroscientist and a professor. My career in neurodiagnostics has provided me with vast leadership experience as I've served in many capacities within the field including management and at the executive level. Some of the skills that I have developed along the way include working in a diverse and collaborative environment, managing conflict, motivating people, and managing change. Recognizing the strength that comes from diversity is essential when working as a part of a group. Each person is one voice to process that will determine the future direction of the Society. This process can often breed conflict and a healthy appreciation and strategy for handling conflict is required for the success of the group's mission. It is important to recognize that decisions made by a group such as the BOT may result in changes that have downstream effects on others. Helping people to manage change is essential if the strategic plan is to be realized. The skills have prepared me to contribute to strategic goal setting and the allocation of resources as well as being able to hold myself and others accountable to key initiatives.
- What qualities do you feel are important for a BOT member to possess? What experiences have helped you to develop these qualities?
In my view, the most crucial qualities for a Board of Trustees member are accountability and strategic thinking. Having honed strategic thinking through years as a scientist, I developed the skill to design experiments and anticipate challenges. As an executive in intraoperative monitoring, setting strategic priorities and establishing key performance indicators for my department is a daily responsibility. Effective boards thrive on individual contributions aligned with the collective mission. Accountability, therefore, becomes paramount. My experiences in the laboratory, classroom, and boardroom have ingrained in me the importance of holding oneself and colleagues accountable. It's not just about setting strategic priorities but ensuring commitment to them. The success of a Board of Trustees hinges on each member's dedication to the group's mission and the ability to navigate challenges strategically. These qualities, accountability, and strategic thinking, form the bedrock for effective governance and leadership within a board setting.
- ASET is actively working to promote increased membership benefits, advocacy, and offer multiple educational opportunities. What other important STRATEGIC goals would you have for ASET if elected?
Advancing scientific knowledge through robust research should be a strategic focus for the Society. Within the field of neurodiagnostics, particularly in intraoperative monitoring, there is a paucity of peer-reviewed research. Advancement of research will allow us to explore new and expanding technologies as well as help close the gap in outcome studies. To facilitate this, the ASET boasts a reputable journal exclusively devoted to the field of neurodiagnostics. This valuable resource should be widely promoted within both the membership and the field at large. By prioritizing research as a strategic initiative, we can move the field of neurodiagnostics forward, which will improve patient care over the long-term
